Frita Batidos’ (restaurant) narrative is made tangible through a series of constructed culinary spaces by leaning into its origin’s asynchronous and foreign geographies. “Out” of both time and place, the owner’s childhood climatological impressions of elongated summer days in mid-1970s Miami compose the primary material and experiential prompts. Hence, with careful lighting and material play, the too-bright, too-humid, and caustic ultraviolet qualities of South Florida’s quick weathers are distended latitudinally northward to produce mimetic spaces of climatological hiccup. Within each geographic mis-place, “local” Cuban-centric flavors and playful Latin gaming histories patiently and somewhat nervously await the sabal and silver palms’ arrival.  Temperature warms, palmettos shade, and urban sands creep (back) in to finally(!) catch up and re-inscribe “proper,” authentic context.

Over the period from 1951 to 2017, the average temperature of The Great Lakes Region has risen by 2.3°F, and the frost-free season has extended by 16 days. This has led to a 14% increase in total precipitation and a 35% increase in heavy precipitation events. The future projections are even more alarming, with average air temperatures expected to rise by up to 6°F by 2050, and by up to 11°F by 2100.* “Miami” indeed moves North.
