The Canopy is a net-zero, multifamily proposal that models a climate-forward alternative vision for urban dwelling. The project developed in response to a single-family residential development scheme designed to clear cut a site rich with old growth walnut, hickory and bur oak trees. Neighborhood outcry successfully shut down the initial development scheme and communicated sustainability priorities. Our proposal consolidates and matches the original density into a 5-story bar, and preserves all of the old growth trees on site. The form curves slightly to minimize the visual impact on adjacent neighbors and is oriented to maximize the harvest of solar energy. In contrast to the pattern of balconies on the south orientation, the north side is unified by a lightweight green façade covered in native vines grown from the grounds. A mix of unit sizes and configurations provide affordability benchmarks supported by novel configurations of heat pumps, solar thermal recovery and graywater thermal recovery that minimize operational energy loads. The rooftop solar PV canopy balances total demands through its annual production. In sum, the project provides a multifamily residential model that cares for the future of shared living and climate by calibrating and coordinating technical and cultural approaches to sustainability within a heritage landscape.
