Following the coal boom in Appalachia, the Ohio Valley Region was once the most prolific producer of architectural ceramics and brick in the United States. While the coal mines are now gone, their scar remains open as acid mine drainage seeps out of mine openings, polluting over 6,000 miles of streams with iron oxide and manganese dioxide. re:FE reclaims this acid mine drainage as key minerals in an architectural cladding made entirely from locally sourced materials and motifs from historic brick manufacturing. This research has been made possible through industry collaboration with Ludowici Clay Tile and True Pigment, with support from the Taubman College Research Seed Fund.
